Horror death metal quintet from Östersund in Sweden, Shikaka put out their debut EP titled Ocean of Blood not long ago. Rocking Charts sat down for a chat with the band and we asked them about the EP, favourite records, gear, and more.
Hey folks. How are you doing?
We are all doing great man!
You are about to release Ocean of Blood EP. How do you feel about the release?
We feel very good about it. We’re very proud of what our hard work came together and we can’t wait until it’s finaly out.
How much of a challenge was to work on the EP?
There was quite alot of them actually. Musically we wanted to keep it simple, yet powerful and that every part of each song had something to say. Not overcomplicating things is alot harder than it sounds. Then there’s the actual tuning of the instruments which are tuned very low, so getting them sound good and blend together took us some time and alot of thought.
What other artists similar to your genre that are coming from Montreal are you friends with?
Well that is a har question! let me just say there are many Canadian bands that we really dig. For instance, Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, Ion Dissonance, and also Gorguts, Beaneath the Massacre, Neuraxis etc.
Can you tell me something about your influences?
We weren’t directly influenced by a/some specific band(s). But we’ve been listening to many death metal bands from old school to tech-death for a long time! as well as many modern stuff!
What are you listening to these days?
A variety of stuff! as I mentioned in the previous question. We are mainly interested in good music even if it is Jazz, Classic or even soundtracks.
Your 5 favourite records of all the time?
Well that is challenging! But right off the top of our head, Global Flatline by Aborted, Minus the Herd by Ion Dissonance, Måsstaden by Vildhjarta, Nothing by Meshuggah, A Skeletal Domain by Cannibal Corpse.
Can you tell me a little bit more about the gear you use to record Ocean of Blood?

We welcome ye to the domain of Shikaka! We’ve learned a lot while recording our EP and the next record will definitely sound darker, bigger, and more brutal!
